Patrick Manser

I build models and visualisations that help us shape sustainable transport systems around people's future travel needs.

  • Model human travel behaviour and how it may change.
  • Make data and models accessible through visualisations and maps.
  • Create clear and statistically sound stories around transport outcomes.
  • Explore new digital tools and connect research with practice.
  • Learn and grow with the people around me.

Experience

2025 — present

Mobility Cooperative ∙ Rotkreuz, Switzerland

Explore how people use carsharing and identify opportunities to grow the station network. Use spatial analysis and demand modelling to understand how user behaviour and sociodemographic characteristics relate to vehicle utilisation. Create interactive maps to support the planning and expansion of the carsharing service.

2024 — 2025

Family Time ∙ New Zealand

Dedicated family time while travelling around New Zealand in a motorhome.

2022 — 2024

Arup NZ ∙ Auckland, New Zealand

Developed New Zealand's first nationwide travel forecasting framework, known as Monty. Led the technical work of an international team of experts and worked closely with the Ministry of Transport to develop policy-relevant modelling capability. Applied the framework to transport questions across New Zealand and produced reports and documentation.

2017 — 2022

Swiss Federal Railways ∙ Bern, Switzerland

Built and calibrated SBB's multimodal, agent-based transport simulation covering all of Switzerland. Implemented the activity-based demand model from scratch with PTV. Applied the model to case studies involving future populations and railway timetable changes. Collaborated with researchers to improve the underlying modelling algorithms.

2017

ETH Zurich ∙ Zurich, Switzerland

Applied a novel algorithm to optimise Zurich's bus network using agent-based simulation.
